I changed my blog description. Why? because growing up I never thought I would see what happened this Sunday. I never thought that I could talk to so many people who don't care what it costs in liberty so long as the government is going to "take care" of them. I never thought the day would come when everything from sewage, to food, to health care and banking would be entirely controlled by a centralized government. Then again, I have seen individuals sign petitions outside the library without reading them (and the people collecting the signatures don't always give accurate descriptions of what you are signing people). I have met more people my age who can't stand to listen to age old advice from an elderly person. I have sat and watched as History is ignored in schools (my teenage neice cant tell you what the Declaration says, what the constitution is and the difference between the American Revolution or the Civil War). I have watched as we have Policed the world with the help of the other global powers, and I have listened to a brilliant ecological anthropologist talk about the dangers in agriculture that are so abundant it is frightening even to think of. His worst fear? The control of seed stocks so that they will not genetically reproduce, making people dependant on buying seeds EVERY year! Still with everything going on around me I never thought that it would come to this. I never thought that the laws that govern who can be elected president, how changes are enacted and bills are brought into law could be changed. We are as the citizens of Germany say we are, falling more and more into the trap they encountered in the 1920's and 1930's. I love my country, and if the majority of her people wanted government run health care I guess I would have to support that social experiment, but these are large decisions being made not by the people, but for the people who are to quiet and concerned with survival to hear what is happening around them. These are strong opinions, but I am not alone in them. I share the company of Ben Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson who knew that there needed to be limits on any centralized government. Worse still are those people who accept the bad based on religion who think that they don't need to do anything because this country has to fall right now. I believe that if our children would study more of history they would be in the company of these great minds. They studied history endlessly, we have not and we are handing over our liberty at an alarming rate. We live in frightening times.
